A well waxed car looks sleek and clean but looking great is not the only reason to learn how to properly wax your car. A fine coat of wax will serve to protect your car’s paint from the elements and unforeseeable stains. Follow these steps to apply wax by hand the right way and leave your car shiny, protected and attractive.

Park in the Right Spot

The first step in properly applying wax to your car is to park in the right place. Ideally, you will have a covered garage to park in but a shaded outdoor space is also fine. Direct sunlight should be avoided as the wax will dissipate before you have a chance to work it into the car’s surface.

Have a Dry Car

The best time to apply a fresh coat of wax to your car is right after it has been washed. Before you start the waxing process, go over your car with a microfiber drying cloth to make sure the car is completely dry. Wax that is applied to a damp or wet car will smear, be difficult to work with and dry in streaks.

Use Thin Coats

Apply wax in several thin coats, not a single thick one. Thin coats of wax are much easier to handle and provide a more even and flattering finished product. Allow each coat to cure and set before going back over your car with the second coat. Repeat this for the next several coats until your car has the desired shine and polish.

Uneven Spots

No matter how careful, methodical or painstaking you were while applying the thin layers of wax to your car, uneven or missed spots are bound to happen. After the final coat is set, check the entire car for spots that need additional attention. Consider employing a detailing spray for any streaks or smeared wax.

Remove Wax

With a microfiber cloth that won’t leave behind stray threads or lint, gently remove excess wax from your car’s surface. This will keep the wax from drying on your car and defacing the polish and shine you worked so hard to create. Once that is complete, step back and enjoy your shiny and protected car.

A properly waxed car looks great and is protected from harmful elements. Take your time and work carefully to wax your car perfectly by hand every time.
